10 Things That Happened At Carnaval In Panama

This year me and a group of friends headed to Penonomé, Panam¡ to celebrate the legendary carnaval in Panama there. We spent two days of non-stop partying at the culecos and Peskito, which lead to some interesting things happening.  Here’s my list of the 10 things that happened at carnival in Panama:

1. I got sprayed with a fire hose and loved it

2. I ate A LOT of street meat”¦and didn’t get diarrhea

3. My friend got bit by a Zebra

4. We thought it would be funny to meditate in the middle of the street”¦and a crowd of people watched

5. We slept through the parades”¦so I had to go to the one in Panama City when we arrived back on Monday

6. I drank sooooooo much Seco

7. I peed on myself a lot”¦the bathrooms were SO FAR AWAY through a huge crowd – so I urinated on myself like everyone else was doing and then waved my arms to get sprayed with water

8. Someone referred to us as “the gringos from last night”

9. I broke my $4 sunglasses…which is why I bought two pairs of $4 sunglasses

10. I survived and had an awesome time – I definitely know why Panamanians look forward to going to carnival all year!

Joey Bonura Thanks so much for the advice! We chatted with our Panamanian friends last night on fb messenger and they said we will all stay in their beach house in Bijao over Carnival. Are you familiar with this area? Do you think it will have a Carnival atmosphere/crowds or will we then want to head to Penonome for a day at Carnival? What are the beaches like there? Could we snorkel or surf? As this is our first visit I really am ignorant with this. LOL! Sorry!

Visiting during carnaval is definitely unique compared to the rest of the year and it looks like in 2015 they will be from Feb 14-17. For the most part Panama City will be a ghost town because people will have several days off work so they are either heading to the beach or to the carnaval celebrations outside the city. There is a carnaval in Panama City but it is the worst one out of all the carnavals and they have drastically reduced the budget for the upcoming one so it probably won't be worth going to unless you want to just see what the parades are like. I recommend going to the one in Penonome and then you would be somewhat close to El Valle so it would be easy to do a day of carnavals and a day in El Valle. Pearl Islands might be a little more crowded than normal but it should be fine to go to. On Ash Wednesday I believe most things are open normally.

Are we (myself, my husband, and our 12 yr old son) crazy to plan a family vacation to Panama during Carnaval? We have friends that are Panamanians that we will stay with in PC. We also want to spend 2 nights in the Pearl Islands and 1 night in El Valle. We are young (I'm 32) and like to party so we think we would want to be in PC for the peak of Carnaval. What day(s) would that be in 2015? I don't think we want to spend all four days doing the Carnaval thing. Does the country shut down on Ash Wednesday? Would that day work for visiting the canal or what are the crowds like that day? Thanks for al your advice!
