The preliminary plans have been revealed for line two of the Panama Metro. The second line will go from the San Miguelito to Nuevo Tocumen with a possible extension to Filipillo. It will be 21 km with 16 (17) stations and the entire line will be above ground.

The biggest question on everyone’s mind

Looking through the comments on the article published on La Estrella and comments I saw on social media, the biggest question people are asking is: Why is there not a stop at the airport? With the stations that are currently planned, the Metro stops short of the airport by 3 kilometers. People looking to use the Metro to go to the airport for work or travel will need to get off at the UTP station and then board a Metro Bus or take a taxi from that stop to the airport.

With Panama becoming the “Hub of the Americas” it seems like it would make sense to offer a Metro stop at the airport like they do in most major cities. The reason for there not being a stop at the Tocumen International Airport has not been stated and the stops announced are preliminary so there could still be changes to it. There was also supposed to be an extension of line two that connects from Multiplaza to one of the stops, which has not been shown in this set of plans.

What do you think of the planned route for line two? Leave a comment below:
