Quietly tucked away in Panama City’s San Francisco neighborhood lies Magno Barber Shop: The ultimate place for a guy to get a good haircut in Panama.

[adrotate banner=”18″]When I first moved to Panama three years ago I dealt with transitioning into a new university, new internship, and a new life in general – the last thing on my mind was where to get a haircut…until I actually needed one. I began polling friends who had decent haircuts on where they got theirs and finally decided to try one of them out. The haircut I got was so bad that I shaved my head afterwords. I let my hair grow out and then tried another place that a friend recommend and same thing happened. On my third attempt I just went to a random beauty salon near my apartment called Virgilio’s where I received a great haircut.

This ended up being where I went for a while and I was really happy with the haircuts, but every time I went I was the only guy in there and I was surrounded by women getting blowers and manicures – I even had to wear a cheetah print cape one time when the black ones weren’t available. What I really wanted was a high-end masculine barber shop like I was used to going to in the states but this did not exist in Panama until recently.

Meet Magno

Magno is located on Calle 71 in San Francisco

I discovered Magno Barber Shop while trying out a new restaurant on the same street. Just from the look of the outside I could tell it was the type of place I have been waiting for to open in Panama for years. I booked an appointment there the next I needed a haircut and received one of the best haircuts I have gotten in Panama. So now a month later I have returned for a second haircut as well as to try out some of their other services.

The typical men’s barber shop in Panama doesn’t come close to comparing with Magno. The atmosphere at Magno is relaxed, masculine, and the type of place a guy can feel comfortable in. The decor is new and modern looking and they even have a pool table on the second floor you can use while you wait or just hang out at after your haircut.

Services to meet a man’s grooming needs

At Magno they offer every service that a guy could need: haircut (kids too), shave, massage, manicure, pedicure, hair removal, and more. You also get a complimentary drink included with any of the services you do – so $13 for a beer and a great haircut is a pretty good deal! They also sell men’s health supplements and high quality men’s hair products, which is something I have had a difficult time finding in Panama.  As a bonus they can even wash your car and have it ready for you by the end of your appointment.

For this appointment I received a haircut, manicure, pedicure, and hair exfoliation so that I could try out the range of services offered. This would be the second pedicure I’ve gotten in my life. The first one I did when a friend was visiting me in Panama that wanted to go and it was so painful! I swore I would never get one again but I actually found this one relaxing and pain free. It also could have been the beer I was drinking that helped so I may have to start making beer and a pedicure a regular thing 🙂 My haircut was done by Edwardo this time and the previous time I received one from Cesar. Both haircuts were excellently detailed and I was very pleased with the results. It’s good to know that I can trust any of the barbers working there to deliver a good haircut.

The Gentleman’s Club

Magno also has an awesome Gentlemen Club rewards card where you can save on all of Magno’s services. With the card you get:

  • 20% off haircuts
  • 10% off manicures and pedicures
  • 20% off spa treatments
  • 10% off a car wash
  • 2nd courtesy drink
  • Courtesy drink at at Starlight Karaoke

The card is just $25 and it’s part of the City Shoppers network so you also get discounts at several other places as well.

The final results

BEFORE AFTER MAGNOI just needed a trim so there is nothing dramatic about my results, but I have consistently received two good haircuts in a row from both barbers at Magno, which is exactly what I needed. I’ve noticed in Panama if something I want doesn’t exist yet, it will eventually pop up if I’m patient. I’m living in a developing country where new businesses are constantly opening their doors to fill in the missing gaps. So I’m glad to say Magno has finally filled the gap for a cool place for a guy to get a haircut in Panama!
