For the past four years, Late Night Music has been innovating and growing Panama City’s electronic music movement.

When I first moved to Panama in 2011 there was a budding electronic music scene but you kind of had to search for events and they weren’t every weekend. One of the first electronic music parties I remember going to was Flashmob Music Movement (part of Late Night Music) at Villa Agustina in Casco Viejo…

The venue was gritty, the music was underground, and there was just a small crowd of people grooving to their own beat. It was something different from the normal nightclubs on Calle Uruguay that previously dominated Panama City’s nightlife and I loved my first taste of what was to come.

The Evolution Of Late Night Music

After being established in Villa Agustina for a while, Late Night Music moved down the street and debuted at the newly renovated Teatro Amador with a weekly party series. They’ve thrown some amazing events that I’ve attended since then – showcasing Panama City’s local talent and bringing in international DJs.

The parties have come a long way from the Villa Agustina days. More people are finding that they like the music / vibe / lifestyle and the events are packed with a follower base of Panama City’s trendiest partygoers.

I went to last week’s Boat Affairs party hosted by Late Night Music where we cruised around the Panama Bay for an incredible night of music and dancing.

After that night I realized what really makes these parties are the PEOPLE and their ENERGY, and it’s contagious. There’s no awkward standing around – the second we stepped on the boat people were in full party mode. People go to these events to have a good time.

Interview With Lloyd Keene

Lloyd Keene and his brother Kevin are local DJs (K.E.E.N.E.) and are some of the masterminds behind Late Night Music…

What was the electronic music scene in Panama like before Late Night Music?

There was a lot happening. The only thing is, there was a tendency of leaving our local DJs behind. Basically people would only go out if there was an international artist. Because of this, 4 years ago we did our first Late Night Music nights. Local talent for the Electronic Music Lovers.

What made you decide to start putting on these events?

A part from the need of proper exposure for local talent. We also felt things could be a bit more of attention to details. Sound systems and gear were not really a priority before. We try to have the best sound system every time we make a party.

Describe your favorite night in the history of Late Night Music…

Too many to just choose one. Even I try to focus on this last year… top 3 this year would go like:

Our 3rd Anniversary with Adana Twins at Teatro Amador, Our New Years Showcase in Bocas del Toro and Our Annual Rescue Beats with Seth Troxler, Martinez Brothers and Craig Richards.

Bonus Track: LNM Origins was I.N.S.A.N.E.!!!

What differentiates Late Night Music from some of the other electronic music events happening in Panama?

Maybe I’ve already mentioned a couple of them. But another very important one would be that we never wanted to do “THE BEST PARTIES” or “THE BEST BOOKINGS”, etc… we’ve always wanted to present things in an innovative way and share with people this music that we love and find interesting. Provably the rest is already said.

Future plans in store for Late Night Music?

We’re about to Launch our Record Label division. Our main goal is to promote Panamanian original music, with international remixers. Through our international bookings and events we’ve been able to put Panama in the map. But compared with countries in the region like Guatemala and Costa Rica who have several artists releasing on international labels and touring outside, we still have a lot to do to become a real scene. We want to work on that so Panama keeps growing.
