The American Trade Hotel by Ace is one of the most stylish places to stay in the historic Casco Viejo neighborhood of Panama City.

Panama City’s historic Casco Viejo district is easily the hippest and unique part of town to stay. The quiet Spanish colonial streets are a stark contrast from the concrete jungle of high-rises in the city center and instantly feels like you have traveled to an entirely different world, even though it’s only a few minutes away.

An urban renaissance has taken place in Casco Viejo over the past decade. The ancient ruins of Spanish colonial structures have been meticulously restored to be boutique hotels, sophisticated dining establishments, rooftop bars, and Panama City’s wildest parties. But not all has been restored. Interspersed between these are condemned buildings where a few local families live that proudly blast their music all day, with their windows and doors wide open, and a good view of what they are watching on their large flat screen TV, so you get a glimpse into the real local life.

One of the most important restorations in this neighborhood has been the American Trade Hotel. Opening in Fall 2013 this luxury boutique hotel was once a department store known as Foster’s in 1913 and more recently was home to Panama City’s most dangerous gangs.

But the gangs are gone and this 50 room boutique hotel has done a fantastic job of creating a stylish environment that mixes old with the new: classic painted tiles, dark weathered woods, modern furniture, and light colored walls create a stunning contrast.

The property stands at the ecological and cultural crossroads of the Americas, deeply connected to both the historic Old Quarter and the nascent new Panama City – a meeting place for influencers, creatives, and cultures from around the world.

Besides the eye-catching lobby and rooms, the hotel has an array of amenities to keep you entertained. Grab a premium cup of coffee at the attached Unido Cafe, enjoy fine dining at the lobby level restaurant, listen to an amazing jazz concert at Danilo’s Jazz Club, and take a dip in the rooftop pool after a hot day of exploring Casco Viejo.
