The government announced today that the cost to use the Panama Metro will be .35 cents a ride (.70 round trip) and charges will begin on June 15, 2014.

The Metro was inaugurated on April 5 and since it’s opening it has been completely free for users to ride. President Martinelli had assured users that the cost of the Metro would not be more than $1. Most people that were surveyed thought the price would be .75 cents or $1 so some people are pleased with today’s announcement while others are skeptical. The price is fairly in line with Metro costs in the rest of Latin America.

The first line of the Panama Metro includes 19 trains each with 3 cars and 15 stations going from Albrook to Los Andes (being extended to San Isidro this year). Operating hours are 5:00 am to 10:00 pm Monday to Saturday and 7:00 am to 10:00 pm on Sundays . Line two is planned to go from Multiplaza to 24 de Diciembre with a connection point to line one.
