What’s the next hot area for Panama City? All signs point to Amador Causeway, the unique strip of islands at the entrance of the Panama Canal, which is getting the full attention of the Panama government.
The Spanish company C4T, a specialist in developing tourist areas, has been hired to create a plan focused on promoting Amador as an international tourism destination. The new strategic plan will focus on a wide variety of initiatives, such as expanding the roadway to four lanes; creating a long-discussed cruise port and developing marina facilities for the Causeway, according to local media reports.
Amador is widely regarded as an undeveloped gem. The causeway connects a series of four islands, minutes away from downtown, each with picturesque waterfront property and dramatic views of the Pacific Ocean, the city and the entrance to the Panama Canal. This unique setting is already home to the Frank Gehry-designed Biodiversity Museum and the new Amador Convention Center, which progressing again after a series of delays. Thanks to its proximity to downtown, the Causeway is also a favorite recreational spot for Panama City residents, especially bikers and joggers, which can connect via the Cinta Costera.
CT4 has been involved on Amador since 2011, according to its Web site. The company will examine all aspects of the Causeway, including the future of the Convention Center and future development of the Biomuseum, Panama America reports.
The new planning Naos effort will develop guidelines to be implemented by the government in the short and medium term for Amador and look for ways to “generate new business opportunities and jobs, mainly for the tourism sector,” said Luis Felipe Icaza of the Ministry of the Economy and Finance. The government is seeking a balance between tourism growth and preserving Amador’s special atmosphere. The discussions will also focus on potential innovations and new projects that will create business opportunities and promote tourism, Icaza said.
