[adrotate banner=”18″]  Mail Boxes Etc has recently opened their first store in beautiful Casco Viejo and residents, business owners, and tourists are thrilled! People finally have a place to be able to ship and receive goods, print, Skype or use the internet, send postcards and more in one of Panama’s most popular neighborhoods.

I met with the owner Aaron to try out their shipping service as well as have some business cards made and I am really impressed with the level of service they are providing in Casco Viejo.

Here is how my experience went at the new store:

So Panama doesn’t exactly have a mail system

People in the U.S. are so accustomed to opening their mailbox after getting home from work each day to find the latest products they ordered online as well as get their daily dose of junk mail, that living in a world without mail is unimaginable. So when I tell outsiders and new expats in Panama that we do not have a proper mail system I receive a look of confusion.

“But, how do you get mail?”

Well, we can get mail delivered in Panama and Mail Boxes Etc has a streamlined process that makes it simple. The way it works is that they will set up a P.O. Box address for you in Miami and then when you order anything online or need something shipped to you, just use the P.O. Box address. Once your package arrives in Miami, it will be at the Mail Boxes Etc in Casco Viejo within 48 hours for you to pick up.

Also, when ordering things online they have a credit card you can use to make the purchase if you don’t have one (for example, clave cards don’t usually work for online purchases).

I setup a mailbox account myself while I was in the store and one of the convenient things I like about it is that you can track the status of your packages online and through email alerts once it arrives to Miami. I ordered a new bike helmet on Amazon and it arrived to Miami on January 27 and then in the morning on January 29 I received an email that it was ready for me to pick up in Casco Viejo. Convenient and fast!

Aaron also said they will be offering a service soon where they will deliver the packages right to the door of your apartment if you prefer not to pick your mail up at the store.

The plans start at $27 a month for 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds) worth of incoming packages and they also have a pay as you go plan where you just pay for each individual package. For shipping packages they use DHL, UPS, FedEx, TNT or the national post and they will search for the cheapest option based on when you need your package to arrive.

Send postcards to your family and friends during your visit to Panama

I have had several friends buy postcards in Panama while I wasn’t looking and I have to sadly inform them of their bad purchase decision.

1. This is not the U.S. where there is a mailbox on every corner for you to slip your postcard in.

2. If we do find a local post office the postcard will arrive at least 1 month after sending it and you will long have been home by then.

If you want to send a postcard back home the easiest way to do it is through the Mail Boxes Etc in Casco Viejo. If you’re visiting Panama then Casco Viejo is one of the spots you’ll be at anyway so just remember to swing by the MBE while you are there. They supply really cool postcards of Casco Viejo using photos from local photographers instead of the outdated photos found in souvenir shops and they will reliably get it to where it needs to go.

Customer service that goes beyond the call of duty

One of the things Aaron emphasized when I spoke with him is that they want to deliver superior customer service in Panama. If you have spent a decent amount here you may have noticed customer service can be a hit or miss. They want to change that by being a reliable and honest business that people can trust will get the job done.

While I was actually in the store setting up my new mailbox account, a customer walked in and immediately one of the employees greeted her and said, “Hi Carol! One of the packages you sent back to the states just arrived and the others should be there any day now.”

She was so happy with the level of service she received and was kind enough to write a testimonial about her experience with Aaron and his team at the new Mail Boxes Etc store:

These guys have your back!
These guys have your back!

I am a veteran mover. This is my 7th international move, and the 21st time in 28 years that I have changed homes. I will be moving back to the States next week and was particularly nervous about this move because it is so expensive to ship things from Panama, and attention to detail in many services businesses here is not always reliable.

Aaron and his team went way above and beyond the call of duty to help me pack my belongings and to find the best shipping prices available. They were courteous, professional and diligent to a fault, I have confidence that once I arrive in the States, I can call Aaron if there is an issue, and he will help me to sort it out. This gives me great peace of mind in knowing my things will arrive safely back home, even if I am no longer in Panama to personally follow up. I know Aaron and his staff have my back.

I hope my fellow residence of Casco Viejo will support Aaron and his team in their business. You will not be disappointed. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions at carolbellandi@gmail.com.

The Etc in Mail Boxes Etc.

Besides providing shipping services the etc in Mail Boxes Etc stands for quite a few things. They offer graphic design services, printing, brand new computers you can Skype or browse the internet on, business cards, office and shipping supplies, and more.

I have something exciting to reveal now: For the first time in my life I actually have business cards! My blog has grown quite a bit since I started it in 2012 so I thought it was time to make it more official. I designed the cards myself (they can also design the cards for you) and then emailed the design to Aaron and they had them ready within a few days. I think they turned out great:

Now when people ask if I have a business card I don’t have to manually add my whatsapp number to their phone 🙂
